Our Story
Through love, family, determination, and a sweet craving, Pete & Pura Berrios bring Torico to life.
Torico, a contraction of the Spanish phrase “todo rico” which loosely translates to “it’s all good”, is the embodiment of our flavors and culture. In 1968, Pete purchased Jim’s Deli at 20 Erie St. During Pura’s first pregnancy, she had cravings for piraguas that she used to enjoy from her native island, Puerto Rico. To satisfy her cravings, Pete began extracting and creating juices from tropical fruits. Piraguas drizzled with juice concoctions is what stared this frozen venture.
Jim’s Deli became “Tropical Delight” to describe the new business outlook. Pete soon bought an ice cream hand-crank machine and created sorbets and sherbets using tropical fresh fruits. The original flavor was Coquito (a type of coconut sherbet), a hit to say the least and business BOOMED with excitement! With increasing demand, Pete eagerly learned the language of frozen treats through his own trials and efforts, and soon after, started to make ice cream.
With scoops flying out the door and a growing passion to share our ice cream far and wide, we expanded into a second location in Bergen-Lafayette to focus on production.
Now, at 1041 Garfield Ave, we're crafting our beloved flavors and ice cream cakes in larger batches for wholesale, reaching everyone from small businesses to restaurants and families alike, while still offering a sweet spot for locals to grab a treat! Today, Torico Ice Cream is a neighborhood staple, serving up flavors that blend tradition with innovation, making every scoop a taste of pure joy.
Family-owned and operated by three generations and our Torico team, we are grateful to be part of this vibrant and diverse community. Our story continues and, as always, it features you!
Over time,
our list of flavors expanded along with the rapidly growing community and the name “Torico Ice Cream” was born! Our flavors ranged from Vanilla and Chocolate to Lychee and Avocado, from Banana Peanut Butter Chunk to Ube. We enjoy creating new flavors to happily satisfy everyone’s taste buds. Torico currently offers over 65 flavors.
In 2010, Torico underwent a major renovation to restore the beautiful façade, circa 1877. The year 2018 marked our celebratory 50 years of providing sweet desserts to all.
